Since last couple of weeks with the higher gas price, I am reading a lot of news and views on how to get a better mileage from your car. A general conclusion derived for the need of a better mileage is to save money at the gas pumps, which is one of the striking facts. But also, there are other side benefits for this effort. Like your car will have a better longevity and during this long run you would spend less time as well as money on the maintenance. Which in turn would give you peace of mind. Almost all the tips provided here are personally experimented and seen improved performance.

1. Air Pressure. Check air pressure regularly, and keep adjusting it for the right weight in the vehicle. Like if you want to go on a long trip with 5 adults in it, put a point extra to bear the weight. Rotate tires and have the wheel balanced.

 2. Air FilterChanging Air Filter is not a big deal, anyone with some simple knowledge of opening the front bonnet and locating the air filter can do it. If you see the air filter has gone dirty and there are lots of dirt particles attached to it, then it is time to change.

3. Spark Plug /Idling. A newer vehicle does not need to replace sparkplugs very often, especially platinum ones. But in case the vehicle is approaching 100k and the plugs were never changed, then it is better to change it. Remember to put only OEM recommended spark plugs. Most of the time while changing the spark plugs, get the vehicle tuned. This improves the mileage greatly.

4. Speed while driving in freeways should be within 65 mph.If you are driving more than 65 mph on a highway, try driving within 60-65 and see the improvement in the gas mileage. If you are going on a longer trip, try using cruse control or overdrive. This facilitates to maintain a constant speed thus improves mileage.

5. Brake Intelligently. Every time you apply brake, you are wasting gas. So use it only when needed, you may argue well that is what everybody does. Yes, exactly everyone does this. But in most of the cases, slowing down (taking foot off the gas pedal) before applying the brake would reduce the need of it. Mostly in traffic congestions or before approaching a red signal.

Except this, regularly changing engine old and taking care of scheduled maintenance would always give better mileage.
